Spiritual Direction
What is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual Direction is a space that steps out of the noise, distractions, and chaos for a time of tuning in to the conversations of the heart alongside another person. When we long for the hiddenness of God to be revealed but cannot quite hear or see how our ordinary lives are framed by the sacred on our own, we listen together.
Spiritual Direction is:
-
an intentional time of saying "yes" to slowing our pace, tuning out distractions, and becoming attuned to the presence of God in every facet of lives.
-
noticing and examining God's ongoing action in our lives.
-
a prayerful space where your story is held without judgment
-
a process of walking alongside another as we learn to turn from an inner language of shame to make room for God's language of grace.
-
a place for asking the deep soul questions we carry
-
a time to reflect on the ordinariness of our lives interwoven with the sacred.

What happens in Spiritual Direction?
During our time together, I focus on listening with you to the story that is already being written in your life. We may engage in formational practices, or if you're comfortable, dive into Scripture, poems, art, music, or other ways of becoming more sensitive to the work of the Spirit in us.

It is a place both for asking deep soul questions that we already carry and for reflecting on the subtle, overlooked, or hidden ways God is at work.

What Spiritual Direction is not
The term spiritual direction is sometimes confusing because it is neither strictly "spiritual" nor is it comprised of doling out directions.
My goal as your spiritual director is not:
-
to direct you on what and how to live your spiritual life.
-
to limit spirituality only to the unseen, but to instead look to our everyday experiences for invitations from the Unseen One
-
to engage in therapy, counseling, or life coaching. Although similar concerns may be brought to a therapist or life coach, my response and role is to prayerfully discern the Holy Spirit's presence both with and for you.
The Details
Frequency | Regular sessions are one hour per month via Zoom or in-person at my home in White Bear Lake, MN.

Right Fit | Because spiritual direction is not about a "quick fix" but is instead a process of sojourning together, it is helpful for us to discern whether this will be a good fit for this period of your faith journey.

Getting Started | We begin with an initial 30-minute "meet and greet" in which we discuss:
-
Challenges, questions, and hopes for exploration
-
Details and guidelines for spiritual direction
-
Any initial questions you may have about me or what you may expect from spiritual direction sessions
Following the initial meet and greet, if you would like to continue, a 60-75 minute initial session will be scheduled. This is an opportunity for us to explore your faith journey and questions in a deeper way, and to establish a rhythm for our future time together.
